An Accountant's Guide to Computers and Information Technology

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course covers what every accountant should know about computers and information systems and technology. The practical and efficient use of computer technology is highlighted. Topics explained include: popular accounting, taxes, audits, write-ups, forecasting, statistics, budgeting and planning, project management, and activity-based accounting (ABC) software. The importance of information system and data protection, databases, artificial intelligence and expert systems, client/server computing, and telecommunications is discussed. This course also teaches the student how to make lease-purchase decisions and analyze and evaluate information technology (IT) investments.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand what accounting information systems are and their components.
  • Describe the purpose of extensible business reporting language (XBRL).
  • Classify cost accounting systems.
  • Explain the function of activity-based costing (ABC) systems.
  • Utilize cash flow forecasting software.
  • Evaluate computer system failures and establish a security policy.
  • Design a distributed database management system.
  • Implement a system of memory-based reasoning (MBR).
  • Develop a familiarity with client/server environments.
  • Develop an executive information system (EIS) for decision-making.
  • Describe the six key elements of expert systems.
  • Describe types and special features of capital budget decisions.
  • Discuss the effect of Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery Systems (MACRS) on capital budgeting decisions.
